Sedation Dentistry

Tooth Spa in Sunnyvale, California, will not only take the anxiety out of your visit but will make your visit a pleasant and relaxing experience using sedation dentistry. If you know your teeth need a cleaning or emergency care but you are terrified of going to the dentist, sedation dentistry is the perfect solution.

What is Sedation Dental Care?

Sedation dentistry describes your dentist’s ability to reduce anxiety and manage your pain through the use of medication during your dental procedures. It is a very effective tool for those whose fear or anxiety is keeping them from going to the dentist for necessary and/or preventive services. It is also helpful for those with very sensitive teeth, a low pain threshold or a bad gag reflex. In addition, it is often appropriate for those requiring extensive dental work, as it reduces the amount of visits and the time required to complete the procedures.

In the great majority of cases, it is preferable to use conscious sedation options which allow you to remain in control of your breathing and be able to speak and respond to your dentist’s requests. The two most commonly used conscious sedation methods are inhalation sedation and oral sedation. At Tooth Spa, we only use nitrous oxide.

Inhalation Sedation Using Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide has been used by dentists for many years since it not only kills your pain, but also places you in a deeply relaxed, pleasurable and euphoric state. While pure nitrous oxide can only be used safely for a short amount of time, it is now required to be combined with a minimum of 30% oxygen (usually 70%) which makes it extremely safe to use for much longer periods of time. It is administered by equipment through a mask that you place over your nose. Your dentist or dental technician constantly monitors and adjusts the nitrous oxide/oxygen flow through the use of flow meters and pressure gauges. The advantages of this option are:

  • It instantly reaches your brain, resulting in relaxation and absence of pain after several minutes.
  • It can be constantly controlled and adjusted by your dentist to suit your unique needs, unlike oral sedatives.
  • It lasts only for the time required for the procedure, so there is no ongoing effect and you can safely drive back to home or work.
  • It is completely safe in that it has no ill effects on the body.
  • It can eliminate or reduce gagging.

So forget your fears, pick up the phone and contact Tooth Spa for an appointment today. Our dentists are some of the best in Sunnyvale and have received up-to-date training in sedation dentistry in order to give you a relaxed, painless and perhaps even enjoyable experience.
